Five of the Best: Denim Backpacks

I don’t know about you, but we’re currently experiencing a bit of a hangover from full-on festive glam and long for something a bit…calmer. So – without sacrificing any style at all, we’ve picked out our five favourite denim backpacks – ranging from the practical to the…oh go on then, glamorous! You’ll find something for all tastes and budgets in our selection.

GUCCI Denim Marmont Backpack

Denim Marmont Backpack – £1,420, Gucci

We start at the designer end of the spectrum with this rather divine denim Marmont bag, which – though it might give your post-Christmas finances that extra battering, does ooze quality! It wears its designer credentials boldly on its side with signature double-G goldtone hardware on show, and is topstitched into sections, embellished with pearl studs. With a carry handle and zip closure, it has rear adjustable straps.

Juicy Couture Pacific Denim Backpack
Pacific Denim Backpack – £100 (was £200), Juicy Couture

Still designer but rather more modestly priced – and a real bargain at half its original price, we have this durable backpack from Juicy Couture which is made from a (very!) distressed denim, embellished with black stud-adorned applique in a sort of lightning design. This 100% cotton piece has an zip-up external pocket and adjustable, comfortable padded straps. 40cm high, it closes at the top with a zip.

Juicy Couture Pacific Denim Backpack

Studded Denim Backpack – £12.50 (was £25), V by Very

We move onto something altogether more petite now – this rather diminutive denim backpack from V by Very. Its compactness and style – check out those parallel silvertone studs and the chunky chain strap – means it is something that would be better employed as a shoulder bag than as something to take inter-railing around Europe, though it’s finished off with backpack-style straps and zips at the top.

SoulCal Cal Denim Backpack74

Cal Denim Backpack, £10.50 (was £29.99), SoulCal

Something rather more practical now – the Cal denim backpack is made from a very pale denim that features a white pattern. With a zip-up compartment (which has its own zip-up compartment!) at the side and long zip around the top, it is currently on sale for just a shade over a third of its original price, so act now if you want to get your hands on this one.  Its base and straps are finished off in a brown suede-effect material.

Kipling Firefly Up Medium Backpack

Kipling Firefly Up Medium Backpack – £89, Kipling

We’ve long been fans of Kipling’s range of bags and this adaptable Firefly backpack is no exception. Available in grey or black as well as in this navy denim colour, it can be used as a shoulder bag if you alter the straps. It has a zip-up rear pocket as well as two boxy zipped front pockets, giving you easy access to your esssentials. As well as a key hanger, further pockets and a magnetic stud closure, you’ll find a super-cute monkey keyring!

Five of the Best: Cape Dresses

You don’t have to be a superhero to wear a cape…in fact the item itself can come to your fashion rescue when appended to the shoulders of a smart dress. Aside from looking fabulous, they can hide a multitude of sins – especially if you’re not fond of your upper arms. Today, we’re picking out our five favourite currently-available cape dresses.

Self Portrait 3d Floral Cape Dress

3d Floral Cape Dress – £320, Self Portrait

We start with a gorgeous designer piece – this floral cape dress from Self Portrait takes the shape of a classic shift, and is overlaid with floral guipure lace from above the bust to the hem. The top section of the dress has a pale blue mesh overlay, which extends beyond a line of white lace to form a cute cape that reaches just above elbow length. Fastening up at the back with an exposed zip, it has a cream pointed collar.

ASOS T-Shirt Dress With Cape Back

T-Shirt Dress With Cape Back – £22, ASOS

Proving that comfort and style can happily co-exist in one garment, this cape dress by ASOS Collection is made from a black soft knitted fabric with the feel of a T-shirt. The crew-necked dress has long sleeves and a keyhole-shaped cut-out at the back. It’s finished off by a rather dramatic long cape to the back, which has an asymmetric hem and falls to around ankle length at its longest point.

V by Very Frill Cape Dress

Blue Frill Cape Dress – £25 (was £42), V by Very

We love the shiny finish of this blue cape dress from V by Very, which is made from a satin-type fabric in a lovely, almost cobalt, shade. The short dress is finished around the hem with a frilled trim, as is the cape, which falls at elbow length. This gorgeous piece is currently available with for an impressive £17 off its original price tag, so act now if you want to get your hands on this lovely piece in your size.

Chesca Sequin Trim Cape Dress in Silver Grey

Sequin Trim Cape Dress in Silver Grey – £192.50, Chesca

Chesca’s silver grey dress takes the form of a standard shift dress but is topped with a rather lovely cape that covers the bodice and has an asymmetric hem, edged with a broad band of sequinned trim in matching silver. The cape, which ends at just above the elbows, has slit detailing at the front of each sleeve, so you can still show off a small section of your arms –  and the hem of the dress itself is knee length.

Gina Bacconi Melissa Embroidered Cape Dress

Melissa Embroidered Cape Dress – £330, Gina Bacconi

We finish with a real beauty – Gina Bacconi has produced a huge range of stunning shift dresses this season, but this black crepe dress is our favourite by some distance. The simply-shaped, fully-lined dress zips with a concealed fastening at the side and is topped with a long floaty mesh cape that’s embroidered all over with a beautiful floral motif design in shades of green, cream, burgundy and grey.

Stand-out Sale Faux Leather Miniskirts

Miniskirts been a wardrobe staple since the 1960s but have never really been out of fashion since – and leather (or leather-look) versions have remained as popular as ever. Today, we’re looking at five out-of-the-ordinary faux leather mini skirts – each of them scoring highly in the style stakes and every single one currently available at a bargain price!Oasis Faux Leather Chevron Mini Skirt in Black

Faux Leather Chevron Mini Skirt in Black – £28 (was £36), Oasis

We begin with a skirt with a heavy ’60s influence – this black faux leather skirt from Oasis features a chevron pattern, sewn in sections with different (suede and leather-effect) textures and appearing on both the front and the back of the garment. Cut above the knee, this slightly A-line skirt is made from polyurethane fibre, zips up at the back and is fully lined. A timeless piece that can be matched with any colour!

ASOS Bubble Hem Mini Skirt in Leather Look

Pink Bubble Hem Mini Skirt in Leather Look – £10.50 (was £35), ASOS Collection

Arianna Leather-look Tassle Mini Skirt – £7 (£18), Boohoo.com

Another texturally-interesting garment, Boohoo’s Arianna miniskirt is made from a leather-effect fabric in a khaki colour. The edge of the top section of the skirt is angled where it joins to a wide fringe. Beneath this is another layer, which has a straight and narrower fringe, so you needn’t worry about it being too revealing. This skirt is also available in black – and both have over a tenner off currently.

Faux Leather Orange Multi Mini Skirt

Faux Leather Orange Multi Mini Skirt – £5, Everything5Pounds

We’re not quite sure how they do it, but Everything5Pounds are selling this faux leather orange multi mini skirt for…you guessed it, a fiver! (They often have half-price sales though, should you be tempted to accuse us of tautology). Fastening up the back with a zip, it features another hallmark of sixties style – colourblocking – and is made up from panels of leather-effect material in red, orange and brown.

Pink Faux Leather Studded Wrap Gingham Mini Skirt

Pink Faux Leather Studded Wrap Gingham Mini Skirt – £7 (was £20), Pretty Little Thing

We finish with an altogether more contemporary take on the trend – Pretty Little Thing’s studded wrap gingham mini skirt. Made from two sections – a pink gingham base layer overlaid unexpectedly by a panel of black fake leather, edged in circular studs – it fastens to one side with a D-ring loop. It’s currently on sale at less than half its original price tag so act now if you want to acquire it in your size!

Made from a sheer lace fabric in an elaborate embroidered pattern, it has a deep V-back and black ruffled lace edging around the front neckline, as well as a slit at the side.

Victoria Beckham Cami Dress

Victoria Beckham Cami Dress – £310 (was £1,150)

Though – out of all of our choices – it’s undergone the most radical price reduction, this cami dress by Victoria Beckham is still far from being a steal! However, these dresses don’t generally come cheap – and that’s a whopping £840 off the original tag! And it is rather gorgeous – with ruched detailing to the chest and sophisticated styling all round. Act quickly if you like this one though – it’s running out in most sizes as we speak!

Strappy Pleated Dresses

Pleats can often make one thing of regimented clothing and school uniforms, but they’re actually pretty dazzling when used carefully. They can also be really flattering, but the shape of the dress is key – bare arms and or shoulders can make a pleated dress fantastic rather than frumpy! With this in mind, we present our five favourite strappy pleated dresses for your perusal.Whistles Off Shoulder Pleated Dress, Yellow

Off Shoulder Pleated Dress, Yellow – £95 (was £195), Whistles

Yellow is such an under-used colour when it comes to clothing, and it’s a sure-fire way of getting attention, especially in a design such as this off-the-shoulder pleated dress from Whistles. Petite Fiona Tiered Pleated Dress
Petite Fiona Tiered Pleated Dress – £14.40 (was £18), Boohoo.com

This pale grey pleated dress has slender straps and is formed from three broad tiers. It’s also available in black and rose pink, and all three colours are available in the sale – each is simply a steal at this price!

Camouflage Jackets for Men

It’s odd how the camouflage jacket – an item that originally aimed to render its wearer invisible – has become a fashionable item. Luckily, it is pretty useless at hiding you if you’re in an urban environment; and it never seems to go out of fashion. So, with that in mind, we present you with our five favourite camouflage jackets for men:

Zip Through Camo Harrington Jacket With Borg Collar

DSquared2 Camouflage Ski Coat

Camouflage Ski Coat – £1,365 DSquared2

Moving to the designer end of the spectrum, we have this camouflage ski coat from Dsquared2. It’s actually two coats in one – the bottom layer is a black padded hooded shorter jacket which can be worn beneath the camouflaged layer which has an array of visible black zip and press stud pockets, a sizeable hood, a concealed velcro zip closure and the company’s branding. It’s expensive, yes – but it will definitely keep you warm!

Five of the Best: Faux Fur Bomber Jackets

At just over halfway through the year, the fur bomber jacket might not seem like the most seasonal of items: but then, let’s face it, the weather hasn’t been either! For the time being, it can be a great and potentially live-saving warm cover up for a summer dress on a cooler-than-expected night…with the advantage of being able to see you through autumn and even the winter months. With that in mind, we’ve picked out our favourite faux fur bomber jackets.

Helmut Lang Faux Fur Bomber Jacket

Faux Fur Bomber Jacket – £695, Helmut Lang

At the designer end of the spectrum we have this black faux fur bomber jacket from Helmut Lang. In classic style, the jacket has an elasticated hem band and cuffs, but has a hood to the rear. It’s made from 100% cupro – a regenerated cellulose fibre resulting from a chemical process that uses the fibres that stick to the seeds of the cotton plant – and has a super-soft, velvety feel.

Boutique Evie Teddy Fur Bomber Jacket

Boutique Evie Teddy Fur Bomber Jacket – £14 (was £40), Boohoo.com

We really did have second thoughts about this one. I mean – teddy fur? Can that be ethical? After some soul searching, we decided that since teddy bears aren’t an endangered species (and also that they’re not real) then we can all wear this Boutique Evie teddy fur bomber jacket with a clear conscience. It’s also available in a nude colour, as well as in this lovely (frankly teddy-coloured) brown, and both have been reduced handsomely.

Stone Coloured Faux Fur Bomber Jacket

Stone Coloured Faux Fur Bomber Jacket – £14.99 (was £34.99), Select

We finish with another number that has a distinct feel of teddy bear about it! Select’s fur bomber jacket would look just as good over a pretty dress as it will with skinny jeans, and it’ll keep you warm too. With elasticated bands at the hem and cuffs, and pocket detailing at the front, this cute jacket is also available in black – and both are currently selling out fast in the sale at a remarkable £14.99 each!
