Pleats can often make one thing of regimented clothing and school uniforms, but they’re actually pretty dazzling when used carefully. They can also be really flattering, but the shape of the dress is key – bare arms and or shoulders can make a pleated dress fantastic rather than frumpy! With this in mind, we present our five favourite strappy pleated dresses for your perusal.
Off Shoulder Pleated Dress, Yellow – £95 (was £195), Whistles
Yellow is such an under-used colour when it comes to clothing, and it’s a sure-fire way of getting attention, especially in a design such as this off-the-shoulder pleated dress from Whistles. It’s not often that you see floral lace pleated in such a way, and we love the combination of thin straps and a Bardot neckline, complemented by a generous drape around the top that forms ‘sleeves.’ Also available in black and currently less than half price in the sale, it’s a real bargain.
Wrap Front Pleated Midi Dress – £38, ASOS
Made from a rather floaty, smoothly-woven, rose pink polyester, this midi dress by ASOS Collection is a really elegant piece and looks great from both front and back! It has a wrap front with a plunge neckline, whereas the back is open, with long spaghetti straps that cross over and form a halter beck. With a full pleated skirt at midi length, this beauty will take you to the grandest summer garden party in style.
Cinnamon Pleated Dress – £380, Three Floor
This form-fitting Three Floor cinnamon pleated dress has so many beautiful design details – from its long, tiered asymmetrical pleated drips that form the skirt to the shaped lace bodice – but it’s the straps that win the day for us. Forming a V-shape at the front of the dress, they’re made from broad bands of hand-cut lace. The rust-coloured dress fastens up the back with a concealed zip.
Pleated Layered Knee Length Dress – £99, Biba
Biba’s blue pleated dresses is, as you’d expect from the company, both stylish and fun. With an above knee-length pleated skirt, it has a fairly deep V-neck at the front as well as a V-back. The top half of the dress has generous pleated drape falling from the neckline and thin straps. This fully-lined frock is perfect party wear, and definitely has more than a hint of a1920s flapper style about it.
There’s no reason why being slightly smaller in stature should reduce your style choices, which is why we’re such big fans of Boohoo.com’s petite range, which produces great fashion pieces for women under 5’3″. This pale grey pleated dress has slender straps and is formed from three broad tiers. It’s also available in black and rose pink, and all three colours are available in the sale – each is simply a steal at this price!
